Russia’s Potato Yields Hit Record High in 2025 as Astrakhan Leads Regional Rankings
Russia’s industrial potato sector achieved a historic yield record of 310.8 centners per hectare in 2025, up 15% from 270.2 c/ha in 2024, with large agricultural organizations reaching 331.6 c/ha. At the regional level, Astrakhan Oblast far outperformed all others with 363.9 c/ha in 2024, followed by Tula Oblast at 280.7 c/ha and Bryansk Oblast at 276.9 c/ha. Among federal districts, the Southern Federal District led with an average of 198.6 c/ha, ahead of the Central Federal District (192.7 c/ha) and the Northwestern Federal District (191.1 c/ha). Within the northwest, Pskov Oblast topped the list at 210.2 c/ha, with Kaliningrad (209.0 c/ha), Novgorod (204.8 c/ha) and the Komi Republic (196.5 c/ha) also posting solid results.
A key feature of Russian potato farming is the sharp gap between sectoral and household production. While industrial yields range between 270 and 310 c/ha, personal subsidiary plots—which account for more than half of the country’s total potato output—traditionally record much lower figures. In 2025, the industrial sector harvested about 8.47 million tonnes of potatoes, with Bryansk Oblast remaining the largest producer at 1.32 million tonnes. These trends highlight both the growing efficiency of Russia’s commercial potato farming and the persistent structural divide between large-scale agriculture and smallholder production.
