Brazil: Potato Prices Ease in October as Winter-Crop Supply Expands
Wholesale potato prices eased in early October as supply expanded, after September rain had briefly pushed them up; the 2026 winter crop is 19% smaller.
Wholesale potato prices in Brazil fell in the week of 5–9 October 2026 as expanded supply pressured quotations, according to the weekly Panorama do Agro of the Brazilian Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock (CNA). In Belo Horizonte (MG), a 25-kg box of Asterix averaged R$116.67 and Ágata R$108.33.
The decline follows a rain-driven rise in September. Conab’s Hortigranjeiro bulletin reported that rain in the Southeast slowed harvesting and shipments in the first half of the month, lifting prices at most wholesale markets: against the August average, CEAGESP was up about 44% and CeasaMinas about 50%.
Before that, the winter crop had pushed prices down. Conab recorded a 37.3% fall in the weighted average wholesale price in July and a further 11.6% in August, although August prices were still 52% higher than a year earlier. São Paulo supplied 52% of the 86.3 million kg traded in August and Minas Gerais 27%.
The winter crop is smaller this year. IBGE’s July survey put output at 892,200 tonnes, down 19.3%, from 22,100 hectares, down 23.9%, with yield up 6.1% to 40.3 t/ha.
At retail, IBGE’s September consumer price index showed potatoes up 24.1%.
Conab expects the southern states’ main supply in November and December from the 2026/27 rainy-season crop, with current estimates pointing to a smaller harvest than in 2025/26 as producers remain cautious and a strong El Niño is forecast.
